Types of Sites

A website is made up of web pages, which contain text, images, videos, and other files. This collection of documents is uploaded to a server that is responsible for displaying the website on the internet. The server itself is connected to a domain, which is the address visitors type to reach the website (example: www.fjcindustries.com). There are three main types of websites:

1. Static: Like the one you are viewing right now (and the ones we offer our clients). They are the simplest type, load quickly, and are what 90% of businesses need. They can be described as a digital brochure containing all the company's information, services, products, contact details, and more. They are highly customizable, and a single person can maintain them while keeping good cybersecurity. Because they are lightweight in terms of file size, it is also easy to create backups and copies, as well as quickly deploy new versions.


2. Dynamic: More complex websites that generally require a team of people to build and maintain. They tend to have more visual effects and features such as user accounts, online catalogs with a store, payment processing capabilities, and more. They provide a much slower experience for visitors and are more expensive to build and maintain. They are also at greater risk of cyberattacks, through which they can be hacked and become victims of data and financial theft. Creating backups requires a dedicated local server due to the complexity and size of the files involved.


3. Web Applications: These are software programs that are extremely difficult to build, maintain, and modify. They require an enormous investment of time and capital, multiple dedicated teams, and several servers operating 24/7. All the challenges of dynamic websites are amplified many times over. However, they are capable of performing highly specialized tasks. They are generally products or services themselves that are either sold directly to customers or offered for free and monetized through advertising. Some examples include Google, YouTube, email services, online banking platforms, social networks, internal business portals, productivity tools, and more.
